I grew up in Richmond, and recently I have started taking photographs of buildings and locations which I remember from my childhood, so this is something of a nostalgia gallery for me.

Miller & Rhoads was one of the two major department stores located on Broad Street in Richmond during the 20th Century. Thalmimers being the other. They hit their peak in the 1940s and 1950s, with the Christmas season at both stores being a major region-wide attraction. The Miller & Rhodes building has been converted into a hotel. The Thalhimers building was demolished in 2004.

  • The Berry-Burk Company was a very popular store selling men's clothing. It was located across Grace Street from Miller & Rhoads and Thalhimers, Richmond's two major department stores.
  • Bill's Barbecue has been a Richmond institution for over 50 years. It still has several locations in the city. In addition to barbecue, two Richmond classics are on the menu -- a limeade and lemon chess pie.
  • Cokesbury is the publishing arm of the United Methodist Church. A Cokesbury store was located on Grace Street in Richmond for many years before relocating to the west end of Richmond. The downtown building with the Cokesbury signs still exists, but apparently is only used for storage.
  • The Southern Biscuit Company was founded in Richmond in 1899, and later became Interbake Foods. Its main product line was cookies sold under the FFV label which stood for Famous Foods of Virginia. This plant is closed and barricaded today.

  • The C. F. Sauer Company is one of Richmond's long time manufacturing companies, and the sign is something of a landmark. The company is still in business, and their website says that this sign is one of the few remaining incandescently lighted and animated signs remaining in the United States.
