High Dynamic Range Photography

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography is a special digital photographic technique used to expand the exposure range of a photograph. A single photograph of a scene that has both very bright and very dark sections is not able to maintain visible detail in both the bright and dark areas. HDR photography uses special software to combine multiple images of the same scene - each image taken at a different exposure. I typically use three images with one exposure being fairly "normal," one holding detail in the bright portions of the image, and one holding detail in the dark portions. Photoshop has the ability to do this manipulation, but I usually use a specialized program called Photomatix to process the combined images. Depending on the desired result, the final image can be processed to look quite natural or the image can be processed to look garish or almost painterly. Most of the time I go for a kind of dramatic look.
